My Story
A few years ago, I decided to stop conforming and start living. I chose to leave my twelve-year profession as an educator to pursue a career of personal development coaching, inspirational speaking, and writing. I had a difficult time making this change because, in my Mexican culture, education is one of the most noble professions that one can pursue. Most of my friends studied teaching in college, and there were many jobs for bilingual teachers in the Central Valley of California where I lived. Becoming a teacher represented the path of least resistance for me. I am grateful for the experience because it brought me to where I am today. However, although I enjoyed teaching for many years, it was not my true-life purpose.
After more than a decade of classroom teaching, I became desperate for more significance and meaning in my life. I decided to go back to school to get a master’s degree in education so that I could become a school principal. Moving from the classroom to administration was a natural step for an educator seeking growth in their career. I returned to college and earned a master’s degree in education and an administrative credential, graduating with honors. However, I still did not feel fulfilled. My soul felt empty. As I reflected on this empty feeling, I realized that I had never wanted to be a school principal. I wanted growth and more meaning in my life, but becoming a school administrator was not the right fit for me. I realized that I was not passionate about test scores or curriculum which school principals needed to focus on. My passion was building character.
I remembered that what had made me come alive in the classroom was teaching lessons about perseverance, respect, responsibility, and kindness. I could not pursue this passion fully as a school administrator.
At first, this new discovery devastated me. I had invested two years of my life and close to twenty thousand dollars in something that I was not passionate about. However, I believe there are no accidents in life, and I was being guided to my true path. I had done my master’s thesis on character development. I realized that this had been a step in discovering my passion. I loved teaching character development! After I made this awesome discovery, I discovered that there were many adults, like myself, who were alive but not actually living. These adults went to jobs that they were not passionate about. They feared Monday mornings and yearned for Fridays.
As an educator, I observed many teachers who counted the days until the beginning of summer vacation and dreaded the start of the school year. I could not bear to continue to simply exist. I wanted to be alive! So, I packed up my classroom, left my job as a teacher, and never looked back.
Today I am the founder of Believe. Change. Become. I help women come alive by identifying and pursuing their passion. I advise them to not settle for a life that is not of their own creation. I am living in joy and purpose now, and I want other women to also learn to believe in the power of their dreams.
My journey has not been an easy one. It required reflection, courage, and growth. I have experienced more failures than successes, but it’s the failures that remind me of my strength. Failures give me the gifts of lessons that I need to learn. I pay attention to my mistakes, and I use them to adjust my sails and move forward. I used to play it safe, because I did not want to fail. Now I know playing it safe is what causes our true failure—failing ourselves. We are here to play a bigger game. We are here to shine. In your journey to becoming your true self, you will stumble and fall. You will have many doubts, but those doubts are only fear speaking. Ignore doubts and fear. You have what it takes to succeed in living a life of bliss and joy!
